HNCP UPDATE: DECEMBER 2017/JANUARY 2018

MEL TROTTER, DEGAGE TALKS YIELD NEW CENTER

By Sue Gilbert

HNCP Program Coordinator

Greetings from the Heartside Neighborhood Collaboration Project!

TRACKING SHELTERS, MEALS
Winter has arrived, and HNCP has been working hard to help people in the Heartside community find shelter from the cold and warm meals to sustain them. We have updated our documents for Heartside warming centers, and overnight shelters and meals open to community guests. We have released the documents throughout Heartside.

NEW COLLABORATION
This year, there is an exciting new collaboration between Mel Trotter Ministries and Degage Ministries! Mel Trotter was approached by Western Michigan University to purchase the parking lot and the two buildings that had served as Mel Trotter’s Day Center and Pantry. After much prayer and discussion with the leadership and board, Mel Trotter sold the property last year but maintained possession of the day center and pantry until January 1, 2018.

In preparation for this, Mel Trotter and Degage had many conversations on what it would look like to partner in a combined community center. Both agencies agreed that by partnering they would:

— Be able to eliminate duplication of services

— Pool their resources by having Mel Trotter staff at the center, and

— Have a greater impact on the community and the guests/patrons they serve.

The new Heartside Community Center at Degage, which opened on Dec. 11, 2017, is an excellent example of the type of valuable collaboration/partnership HNCP has been encouraging and supporting in recent years. I believe it did, indeed, spring from relationships nourished by HNCP. So, please join me in praising both Mel Trotter Ministries and Degage Ministries in their thoughtful, prayerful decision to increase their impact on the Heartside community!

I wish you all Peace and a very Merry Christmas!HNCP-logo_cmyk
